A time to sow and a time to reap
A time for war and a time for peace.”
Personally, I am a pacifist. I don’t believe in war as a solution to the ills of humankind. Why then is my garden a war zone? Between the deer, raccoons and the slugs, I wage a full-scale battle most of the year. Now, the slugs are after my Napa Cabbages. I refilled my beer traps, and I know the ducks have visited that part of the garden. I think the slugs like cabbages more than beer.
I am not the only one doing battle against invaders in my garden. Hummy, the hummingbird has declared our acre his year round home. He chases away other hummingbirds--even his lady-love once he has had his way with her. He spends his summer frantically racing from feeder to flower to drive his mate and offspring and any passing intruder from his territory. Of course his relatives don’t pay much attention to him and wait until he is defending the cutting garden before they approach the feeder on the other side of the house. Hummy accepts us as the fillers of the feeder and providers of warm winter Christmas lights.
